Movie – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Movies Nov 23, 2019

Overview:

This isn’t your traditional Spiderman, it’s one that deals with dimensional collision and multiple Spidermen hence the naming of the movie, spider-verse. The universe we are put into we have the main character that has recently been transferred to a new school that is shown to have a more upstanding and higher end presence especially in comparison to his old school. Within his new school he has his own dorm room, but he isn’t satisfied with the place at all. To make matters worse on the way to school that he initially was going to walk to he encounters his dad who is a police officer. His dad takes him to school in his police car since he was on duty but once he dropped him off embarrassed him quite a bit in front of many of the other students. His dad was trying to be funny and lighthearted about his actions, but they do not come off that way at all to him.

After a terrible day of school, he runs to his uncle’s house ignoring all calls received from his family. His uncle is a person he dearly looks up to and holds close to him shown by the relationship and conversation they had while at his house. Hid uncle after hearing what he is going through tries to console him and takes him to a hidden place he knows about where he can express himself a bit through the graffiti style art he does but cannot show anybody else. Both him and his uncle do a decent size graffiti in the area he was taken to. As they both were leaving the spider bit him, and he proceeds to slap it off him killing it without a second thought thinking it was just a normal spider. The next day he finds himself to be just a bit taller than before and the cloths that just yesterday fit now were quite a tight and small fit on him. He found this extremely strange but passed it off as if it’s just puberty. Once he arrives through he front doors of the school he finds the girl he talked briefly with the other day and has a slight incident with her shortly followed by him running and finding something that made him think that he had found the cause. Once at the place him and the uncle were at last night he investigates the spider to find out it has a weird glitch to it. Immediately following there is a showcase of this verses Spiderman fighting a peculiar looking green goblin. During their fight Spiderman is trying to spot the dimensional machine from activating but fails leading to the dimensions colliding a bit. The responsibility to shut down and destroy said machine is then passed onto the boy who immediately responds with “I will do it”. Shortly after we are introduced to the other Spiderman who is shown to have a drastically different life than the one in this verse. One thing leads to another and both alternative verse Spiderman and the boy head over to a remote location to gather some intel where a slight fight takes place but while on the escape meet yet another spider.

With both alternative verse Spiderman and the boy together, they head over to the aunt’s house and taken into a lair where they encounter the rest of the Spidermen that were brought over due to the dimensional rift that had occurred. Once all were together the movie moved quick quickly but an appropriate pace to the conclusion of finally destroying and sending the Spiderman back to their own verse where they belong. With the final battle ensuing each Spiderman says their goodbyes and returns home where after they have all left it’s just the boy left to handle the Villain. The Villain did have an appropriate reason and want to cause a dimensional rift but the way he went about obtaining his goal like many other villains is only one of many ways and this way happens to be considered bad. Post-fight the boy finally comes to terms with himself and what his new-found duty is to be.

Visuals/Music:

Starting off with the music as with most films it was suitable for the moments and was properly placed accordingly when needed with silence used as required as well.

Onto the visuals, they are very good with the showcase of a comic book styling throughout the entire film. The main complaint though is the fluidity of motion with everything in the world. They went for a comic book vibe but to me the visuals would have been enough. They cut the framerate in half and everything looked like a slideshow. Perfect example to understand what I mean is for anybody that has played at a high framerate or even 60 fps then goes down to a lower framerate. Say you play at 60 for all games then run on console at a locked 30, the entire game will look terrible, not visually how it looks but how it feels and fluidity of objects on the screen. This style of framerate cutting is best suited for in recent years, The Lego Movie or any type of stop motion picture films. This is something that you’ll not notice as you further get immersed into the movie but the moment you are not fully immersed the framerate becomes apparent and sort of ruins the experience due to the technique being used not properly implemented for what it is intended to be used with. I get they are trying to go for more of a comic book animation style which was done on point but having fluid movements in this type of film I believe would have made it better for the overall viewing experience. It doesn’t take away from the quality of movie but is more of something that makes it harder to get fully immersed within the film itself. Other than the framerate of the film its entire art direction was a great choice and style.

Final Thoughts:

The execution of the movie was great. I must admit I have been a bit burnt out on marvel movies but today was a bit refreshing as it didn’t seem like they were trying hard to make their iconic cringe comedy as prominent as the past several marvel films have been doing. It was there, but nowhere near as bad and took a different approach that I believe paid off quite well for the film. Before watching it I wasn’t expecting much at all and was honestly thinking it would be average at best but was wrong and consider this to be an above average film. Just wish the framerate issue wasn’t there lol. First time I have ever complained about framerate in a movie and just fees a bit weird how that of all things would be a problem. It’s an above average film and would recommend it to others, not highly recommend but it is a fun movie nonetheless.
