Movie – Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Overview:

Starts out with a showcase of Mewtwo breaking out of a containment facility. From here we are told that the person we saw driving away was the father of the main character, Tim. Tim after finding out the bad news regarding his father goes to his fathers work and house. When he is there that is when he discovers pikachu who was his fathers partner. Both of them together then make it a goal to find out what happened to him and solve the mystery/case at hand. Tim is shown confronting his past regrets while pikachu learns more about his forgotten past.

Up until the very end is figuring out details of this case. Mewtwo later becomes a prominent figure as indicated he would from the beginning of the film. Tims character grows by the end and faces his past regret, then proceeds to overcome it which was nice to see. Something I was not expecting from the movie going into it.

Visuals/Music:

The way they rendered out the pokemon makes them appear more stuff animal like. Oddly this works out good enough. I had my doubts and very low expectations due to the style they went for but luckily, I was wrong. The beady little eyes though… at least they had a line calling them out at one point lol.

Music blended good enough and helped with immersion. Did not see any problem with the way they implemented it.

Final Thoughts:

Live action movies of anime, games or any form of media from my experience turn out plain bad or terrible. Detective Pikachu was neither, which is a positive that hopefully other live actions can learn from and build off of gain some sort of decent rep for live actions. Of course, there are plenty of meme worthy moments but that’s to be expected. Overall it was definitely a worthwhile watch and I would recommend others to watch it. The comedy throughout it is not overwhelming or cringe type that marvel is infamous for. The voice actor Ryan Reynolds has a latent humor to him from the way he talks and works very well with this Pikachu.
